Kindergarten Solomon the Crocodile Art

Lesson Background:

My Kindergarten class were learning about the difference between short and long 'o' sounds and how to make them.  We read the story, "Solomon the Crocodile" and hunted for 'o' sounds.  We then made these beautiful artworks based on those I found at https://artroombritt.blogspot.com/2018/04/catherine-rayner-solomon-crocodile-in.html and https://i.pinimg.com/originals/b0/86/5c/b0865c80a336972454c0cb53ab787b32.jpg

Lesson Materials (per student)

1 piece trimmed A3 white art paper

1 lead pencil and rubber

A watercolour paint palette

A waterpot

A thin and medium-thickness paintbrush

A black sharpie

Lesson steps:

1.  We read the book and discussed the shapes and images found in the illustrations.

2.  I modelled how to draw the crocodile step-by-step as the children followed along with their own drawing.

3.  I demonstrated how to use the wet-on-wet watercolour technique, whereby the children lightly painted their crocodiles with water and then dabbed colours into it so that they spread and ran into each other a little.

4.  We painted the background dragonflies, flowers and/or large leaves.

5.  We used the wet-on-wet technique for the background painting, using colours we each liked.

6.  When the background was nearly dry, we used our thin brushes to paint in grasses.

7.  When the artwork was dry we outlined with black sharpie.

Kindergarten Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus Art

Kindergarten Pigeon Art

Lesson Background

My kindergarten class read the fabulous book, "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" by Mo Willems. We were learning about the difference between short and long i sounds, so we went through the story and hunted for them and looked at how these sounds were made. We then made these beautiful artworks based on those I discovered on https://cassiestephens.blogspot.com/2018/02/in-art-room-kindergarten-mo-willems.html

Lesson Materials (per student)

1 sheet A4 white art paper

Watercolour palette

1 thin and 1 medium-thickness brush

Oil pastels

Water pot

1 black sharpie

Lesson Steps:

1.  We read the book, then discussed the shapes involved in the drawing of the main pigeon character.

2.  We watched the video in the above link to watch how the drawing is done.

3.  I modelled each step of drawing the bird and the children followed along with their own paper and pencil.

4.  After drawing the bird, I demonstrated how they could draw some big shapes in the background (I took suggestions from the kids- hearts, stars, confetti, stripes, spots).

5.  The children drew the big background shapes in and coloured them with oil pastel.

6.  We painted our birds and then I showed them how to make little "confetti-like" flicks on the page with the paint to fill out the background.

7.  When dry, we outlined in black sharpie.
